New job and a new house - but still working on Visa

On Thursday, April 28, 2022, after 5 months of initial talks of us moving to England, the contract for Josh's new employment at Rayspec finally finalized. Josh will still be an employee for Moxtek in Orem, and Moxtek will be lending him out to Rayspec in High Wycombe for several years. So, technically Josh is still a Moxtek employee, but will be in charge of Rayspec as a Managing Director. The contract is signed for 5 years (maximum length of a work contract because of visa challenges) but will likely be extended another 2 or more years. The following Tuesday, May 3rd Josh flew to England to start his new job. He stayed there until June 2nd, when he came back to start processing the work visa (and send Daniel off on his mission). During his one month stay he stayed mostly in a small airbnb. He had a great experience during that month and was able to connect well with the employees. He left with the former managing director commenting that all the employees agreed that any concerns they had about "a new boss" evaporated after meeting and spending time with Josh. They found him very personal and are excited to see what improvements he will bring to their company. RaySpec is a small, high-tech engineering company that employs about 30 people. Just as Moxtek, they produce (non-medical) x-ray instrumentation. 


During that month Josh was able to find us a new home in Naphill, a quaint small town with a half a grocery store. We feel pretty blessed with this find, since the housing market in England is about as crazy as in Utah. As soon as something gets posted, it was already rented out. This house comes furnished and is only 10 minutes away from Josh's work and Sarah's new school. Here are some pictures of our new home. It comes with 4 beds, 2.5 baths. My favorite part: There is a gate in the backyard and when you go through that gate you find yourself in a forest!! 




















 

On June 21st, Peter, the former managing director, picked up the keys to our house. Now we just need to get our visas and we'll be able to live there.

While we waited, we decided to visit the Rheinfall just outside Schaffhausen. The drive was beautiful, and the falls were even more impressive than I remembered from my childhood. The photos don’t quite capture it, but the viewing platforms are built right above part of the falls, and standing so close to Switzerland’s biggest waterfall—and Europe’s largest by volume—was incredible. Turkey - a fascinating country where Europe meets Asia

With our time in England winding down we decided we better hit our bucket list spots. Turkey is one of them and became one of my very favorite countries to visit. We spent 6 days in Turkey, enough to see what we wanted, but also long enough to know that we will want to come back.  Wednesday 11 June Today we arrived in Istanbul. The view from the plane showed us what we will see almost around every corner: mosques! We landed on the Asian side of Istanbul (there are 2 main airports, about equal distance from Istanbul) and the Uber took us underneath the Bosphorus (the straight between Europe and Asia) to the European side of the city. We spent today in Sulthamet the Old part of the city where our hotel: Sultanhan. That location is ideal as a tourist, in walking distance to the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sofia (a 5 minute walk from each other.) Trip to Andalusia, Spain - Cleaner than even Switzerland!!

Wednesday, April 9th to Monday, April 15 2024 For Spring break we went on a 5 day trip to the southern part of Spain: Andalusia. Spain totally exceeded our expectations! It’s cleaner, safer and more beautiful than we imagined. I have to admit that the cities in Spain are even cleaner than Switzerland!! The Spaniards definitely take great pride in keeping their country spotless! The only downside was that planning this trip was slightly more complicated: For tickets to the palaces and for accommodation a passport number is required.  Renting a car with a US driver's license requires an international driver's license. (UK driver's license works fine). And most of the main sights had to be booked months in advance. The only tickets we could find for Caminito del Rey and the Alhambra were guided tours, which were a bit more expensive, but worthwhile for what we learned on the tours (plus no need to stand in line with guided tours).  First stop: Sevilla We spent 2 nights in Sevi...
