Quick trip to Dover where one of my favorite war time story happened

There are 8 public "Bank" Holidays in England where almost everyone gets the day off. Some of them are the common holidays, such as Easter and Christmas, but a few are just random days off, such as Aug. 29 to celebrate Summer Bank Holiday.  Initially, it was just banks and financial buildings that would close, which is where the name comes from. So Josh had the day off and we decided to go on a quick trip to Dover (about 2 hours from our home). The Dover castle did not disappoint, but the white cliffs of Dover slightly did, mostly because we already saw Old Harry Rocks and that was even prettier. 

Here's the medieval Dover Castle, build by William the Conqueror in the 11th century with further expansions throughout the following centuries:

It is massive - next to Windsor it's the biggest castle in the UK 

Overlooking the English Channel it was part of many major historical events

Next to this medieval chapel is a lighthouse built by the Romans that was later used as a belltower:

Funniest thing we saw: This medieval chapel is still in use for Sunday services and of course, you've got to have something to entertain the little ones!

My favorite part of this castle was the secret wartime tunnels tour. In these tunnels Operation Dynamo was organized during World War II, also known as the miracle of Dunkirk. Over 330,000 allied soldiers were rescued in 1940 from the beaches of Dunkirk from the advancing Germans. What an amazing story!! 

The white cliffs of Dover were nice but after seeing Old Harry Rocks by Bournemouth, they were not quite as spectacular. However, it was still nice to explore them. 

The beaches aren't very enticing, not much sand to find here

One more picture: This is the grossest thing I have eaten in England, or it may even be the grossest thing I have ever eaten!! It tastes like salty molasses!
